Match Report UUC v Limavady Tuesday, 10th April 2018 The final game of the season was played on Tuesday, 10th April, an away fixture against UUC. UUC needed the points more than Limavady if they were to avoid the relegation play off. The way the game started reflected this with the students being very much to the fore, forcing the play for the first twenty minutes to be contained within Limavady’s half. During this period they were rewarded with a converted try to give them the lead at 7.0. Limavady had to defend manfully to avoid the situation becoming worse. Once Limavady settled down they began to take control in the set-plays and managed to get more territorial advantage. After twenty minutes they were awarded a penalty in front of the posts. Captain, Peter Wilson, opted to forego the certain three points and went for the scrum. From this Limavady drew level, when after several plays, tight head prop Clive Scott managed to crash his way through the defensive tackle to secure the equalising try. From this point onwards Limavady dominated the game and managed to get in front just before the break. Once again it was that man Clive Scott who got the touch down. The conversion was missed but Limavady now had the half time lead of 12.7 The second half belonged totally to Limavady when a further three converted tries were scored. First up was another of the front row union when loose head prop Rory Squires managed to force his way over. UUC tried their best to get back into the game however strong defensive cover from Limavady and some silly errors from UUC made this impossible. The game was put out of reach when Matthew Haslett managed to escape from the back of a maul to run in uncontested to score the bonus point try under the posts. The game was rounded off by an excellent individual effort from man of the match, William McCleery, when his speed was just too much for the home defence. Thomas Macauley converted to leave the final score at 36.7 With this being the final game of the season, this brings the curtain down on the current management team with both Mark Nicholl and Kenny Donaghey moving into “retirement”. Much thanks needs to be attributed to these two gentlemen for all their efforts and dedication over the last two years. Players and Supporters now look ahead with anticipation to the new season beginning in August when a new Coaching team will be in place.
